I love my hair products!! And trying new ones, here I come! But they do have a shelf life. So when you buy hair products (or any products) use them. Most hair products have a shelf life of about 3 years if left unopened. Once you open the products, the shelf life cuts in half to about 1 1/2 years. Because bacteria, air, water, heat, humidity, and contact with your products decreases the shelf life and causes a breakdown of the chemicals, you want to keep your products stored in a cool, dry place when you are not using them. Also keep the bottles shut instead of leaving them open. To help preserve the shelf life, you can transfer the products into a spray can or tube. Label your products with the dates you opened them so it is easy to keep track of. Once they start going bad, your products become useless and can also cause irritation, inflammation, or infection of the skin. You can also tell if they have gone bad by a change in smell, color, or texture. Most products do not have “Best is used by” labels, but you can check the UPC number. Usually the number of months the product lasts is the same as the UPC number on the bottom of the bottle.
Shampoo and Conditioner: 1 1/2 years if opened, 3 years if unopened
Hairspray, Leave in Conditioner, and Other Hair Products: 1 1/2 years if opened, 3 years if unopened
Body Wash: 6 months – 1 year
Stay tuned for how long to keep and clean your brushes, hair and beauty tools.
