What Do I Wear to Graduation – With graduation season here, many girls find themselves pondering what they should wear under those hideous (sorry, they are not cute) gowns! You should wear whatever you’d like to because you earned this day, but at the same time you don’t want to look back at your photos and regret showing up in comfy sweats and Chuck Taylors, or in a club dress and hooker heels. So here come some guidelines to help you decide on what to wear to your graduation ceremony.
First and foremost, you want to wear comfortable shoes. If you’re a pro at walking in heels, wear the highest pair you can find! The majority of commencement ceremonies last more than an hour. You want to be able to strut your stuff across that stage as you receive your hard earned diploma and not look like a newborn bambi on display!
There are a few factors to take into consideration when deciding what garments to wear. Take notice of the location and weather. Is it taking place indoors? Outdoors? Will it be cold? Melting hot? Just perfect California weather? Is the venue elegant? In the football stadium? A nice park on campus? Look at your gown. Is your gown see-through? Take the color of your gown into consideration. This is all important and can help you decide on what to wear…use the process of elimination!
Most girls choose to wear dresses under their graduation gowns. The appropriate length of the dress should is either right above the gown’s hem or above the knee, depending on what age and look you are aiming for. Wear a chic daydress if your ceremony is taking place outdoors or if its hot. A light colored, woven cotton dress with a print or eyelets will do. If your graduation ceremony is indoors or taking place at a later time, wear a cocktail dress. Remember: it is better to be overdressed than underdressed! Some girls opt to wear slacks or pencil skirts. If you want to steer away from the “boring professional” look, use vibrant colors and prints! Remember that white outfits will look best under a white gown – it will look a bit odd otherwise.
When in doubt I will always wear a solid colored dress and let my accessories do the talking. Try adding an embelished collar or statement jewerly to your graduation day ensemble.
